Nobody asks whether prayer works who has never prayed. It is the question of a man who has knelt down beside a bed at two o’clock in the morning . . . and then got up and went to work and wondered on the drive over whether anything at all happened while he was down there.
This study started on a Wednesday night in September 2026, and it would not fit in one Wednesday night. So it is going up here in writing instead, a part at a time, and you can read it at your own pace and bring your questions back with you.
One sentence runs through all thirteen parts:
GOD HAS PUT THE BLESSING BEHIND THE ASKING.
Part 1 proves it. Part 2 explains the machinery. Part 3 answers the objection. Parts 4 through 13 walk it out.
THE THIRTEEN PARTS
Every part is listed here from the start, so you can see the whole road before you start down it. A name becomes a link the day that part goes up.
PART 1 — DOES PRAYER REALLY WORK?
Taking James 5:16 apart a piece at a time — including the four words in front of “availeth much” that we quote right on past.
PART 2 — HOW PRAYER WORKS — THE APPOINTED MEANS
If God has already made up His mind what He is going to do, then what is my praying actually doing? God answers that one Himself, out of His own mouth, in Ezekiel 36:37.
PART 3 — DO I CHANGE GOD’S MIND?
God does not move. The boat moves — and God appointed the rope. What the Bible means when it says the Lord repented.
PART 4 — WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO
Paul’s thorn, David’s child, Gethsemane, and Lazarus. A no from a Father who loves us is not a failure of prayer.
PART 5 — LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY
The disciples watched Him pray and asked for lessons. Walking the pattern He gave them, clause by clause.
PART 6 — WHAT “IN JESUS’ NAME” ACTUALLY MEANS
Not a password we add on at the end. It is the ground we have been standing on the whole time.
PART 7 — ASKING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL
“Thy will be done” is not giving up on the request. It is the strongest praying there is.
PART 8 — WHEN THE LINE IS CLOGGED — HINDERED PRAYER
The water is still on at the faucet. The hose is kinked. What the Bible says puts a kink in it.
PART 9 — THE HELPER WE FORGET — THE SPIRIT IN PRAYER
We do not know what we should pray for as we ought — and God did not leave us alone with that.
PART 10 — KEEP KNOCKING — THE PRAYER THAT WILL NOT QUIT
God is not worn down by persistence. He is honored by it — and He appointed it.
PART 11 — THE APPETITE SET ASIDE — FASTING
Fasting buys nothing. It clears the table so prayer can have the whole plate.
PART 12 — STANDING IN THE GAP — PRAYING FOR OTHERS
The most Christlike thing a Christian does, because it is what Christ is doing right now.
PART 13 — A CHURCH ON ITS KNEES
What God has purposed for this church is behind the asking — and He appointed the asking to us.
HOW TO USE THIS
Read one part, then put it down and go pray. This was never meant to be read straight through in an evening like a magazine . . . every part ends with one thing to try that week, and the trying is where the study actually happens.
And bring your questions to Wednesday night. By the time these are preached from the pulpit, they will have already been read and questioned and corrected by the people who are going to hear them preached — and that is a better sermon than one a man writes off by himself.
