“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” — Psalm 100:4

Seven Sunday mornings, running up to the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

We treat thankfulness as a mood — something that comes over a man when things are going well and leaves him when they are not. The Bible does not treat it that way at all. Thankfulness is memory doing its duty: the deliberate act of remembering who gave you what you have. That is why it can be commanded, and why a man can be held accountable for the lack of it.

Romans 1:21 puts unthankfulness at the head of the long slide. They knew God, “but glorified him not as God, neither were thankful” — and everything after that verse is the wreckage. Unthankfulness is not a small fault. It is the first step of the drift.

So this series walks it out: what thanksgiving is, what it says out loud, where its absence leads, what it costs a man, and where it finally sits down — at the Lord’s table, with the Lord Himself giving thanks.
